Event Description
Abstract: Phenomenology is a qualitative approach that focuses on understanding lived experiences and has been employed in many fields including health sciences, clinical psychology, nursing, and education. It attempts to explore the unique meanings of any human experience or phenomenon. It has been applied to a wide variety of illness and health topics including medical procedure or illness experiences, provider clinical experiences, educational experiences, the experience of stigma, and quality of life – to name a few.
Bio: Dr. Jennifer Costa is experienced with Phenomenology, how it may fit with a given research question, and how it shapes the study design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of study results. In this webinar she will provide both a broad overview of phenomenology and will discuss when this approach is appropriate and how the application of Gadamerian hermeneutic Phenomenology differs from other qualitative approaches. She will also provide a practical example of how Phenomenology has been applied to study examining parent–nurse relationships in pediatric oncology.
Dr. Costa has almost 20 years experience as a pediatric hematology/oncology and palliative care nurse/nurse practitioner. She provides consultation and methodological expertise to clinical teams engaged in evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and nursing research initiatives, from project development through dissemination. She earned her PhD at UMass Chan, Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing. Her research and scholarly interests include pediatric oncology, cancer survivorship, and the relational aspects of cancer care, with particular interest in parent–nurse relationships and the experiences of families and clinicians caring for children with cancer.
