Undergraduate Medical Education
At the UMass Chan Medical School the educational commitment of the Infectious Disease division includes training and mentoring of the next generation of scientists, clinicians and educators. Division faculty teach, mentor and develop curriculum for students in all four years of medical school, and play a major role in developing the Medical School’s new Learner-centered Integrated Curriculum (LInC). Specific courses for medical students are listed below.
Foundations of Medicine 1, INFECTIONS Course (FOM109):
Dr. Jennifer S Daly is the course co-director for the INFECTIONS course, a two month course taught in the spring of the first-year of medical school. Lectures and interactive sessions include the study of microbiology, antimicrobial agents and targets of action, and the pathogenesis of bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections. Students study HIV a multisystem disease, as well as pharmacology of HIV medications. Our ID research and clinical faculty share the teaching in this course with faculty from the Department of Microbiology and Physiological Sciences.
Flexible Clinical Experiences (FCE):
Third year medical students can elect to participate in a one week pass/fail course in Infectious Disease. This experience can be undertaken on the General Infectious Diseases or Transplant Infectious Diseases consult service. In addition to the inpatient setting, there is the option to see outpatients in ID clinic.
Elective in Infectious Diseases (ME423):
This elective, for advanced students in the final year of Medical School, is month long and includes both inpatients and outpatient experiences. Students can choose to rotate on the general ID service at either the Memorial Campus or University Campus, the Transplant ID service, or a combination thereof. Outpatient clinic experiences may include TB clinic, general ID clinic, Transplant Clinic, Travel Clinic or Wound clinic. The ID division accepts visiting medical students who apply through the VSAS application for US students or through a paper application available from the UMass Chan Medical School at http://www.umassmed.edu/studentaffairs/advanced-studies/international/.
