UMass Chan is one of five University of Massachusetts campuses and one of 13 institutions of higher learning in Greater Worcester. Encompassing the state’s T.H. Chan School of Medicine, the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing, UMass Chan offers several unique advanced degree opportunities for residents and fellows including a master’s of public health through its affiliation with the University of Massachusetts Amherst School of Public Health, the new Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation and the Millenium PhD Program.
As home to the Commonwealth’s only public medical school, UMass Chan emphasizes building local partnerships and creating opportunities for students and residents to learn in and serve Massachusetts communities through the care of underserved populations. There is a wide range of clinical training in community based sites including community hospitals, health centers and private physician offices.
Beyond fulfilling its core missions of health sciences education and public service, UMass Chan is home to a thriving biomedical research enterprise. With major funding from the $1 billion Massachusetts Life Sciences Bill, UMass Chan research programs are central to the Massachusetts Life Sciences Initiative. In 2010, UMass Chan was awarded a prestigious $20 million Clinical and Translational Science Award that places UMass Chan among an elite consortium of 55 nationally prominent research institutions that is working to move laboratory discoveries into treatments for patients, engage communities in clinical research and train a new generation of researchers.
The Ambulatory Care Center opened in August 2010, ushering in a new model of academic medicine that combines world-class patient care with world-class research to benefit the health of residents across the region and beyond. The four UMass Memorial Health Care Centers of Excellence (Heart and Vascular, Orthopedics, Cancer and Diabetes) are housed in the 258,000-square foot, nine-story facility, and operate in partnership with key components of the Medical School’s clinical research enterprise.
The Advanced Therapeutics Cluster (ATC), which brings together an interdisciplinary group of research faculty and physician-scientists who are making pioneering advances in stem cell biology, RNA biology and gene therapy. The ATC will be housed in the Albert Sherman Center, a new research and education facility slated for completion in late 2012 and will double the campus’s research capacity, adding to the existing space in the Aaron Lazare Medical Research Building, an innovatively designed research facility that opened in 2001.
The campus’ Lamar Soutter Library is designated as the New England Regional Medical Library in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. The library is a leading source of biomedical information for residents, students, faculty, staff and the public.
The Irving S. and Betty Brudnick Neuropsychiatric Research Institute hosts faculty devoted to studying the biological causes, diagnoses and treatment of mental disorders. The Institute is situated near the Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park, a leading national center for biotechnology research located adjacent to the UMass Chan campus. UMass Chan currently owns 83,000 square feet of the Biotech Park, which accommodates UMass Chan investigators, including scientists from the Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research, an internationally renowned scientific organization that merged with the Medical School in 1997. Through this affiliation, UMass Chan acquired the Foundation’s 80-acre, nine building campus in Shrewsbury, including the Hoagland-Pincus Conference Center, where the Medical School’s Continuing Education and Standardized Patient Program training labs are located.
