Preventive Medicine Training Program

Clinical Medicine Requirements

All trainees are required to complete the equivalent of two months of clinical rotations during each year of training.  There are two required clinical rotations – clinical preventive services and clinical nutrition.  Elective clinical rotations include sports medicine, addiction medicine, refugee and immigrant health, occupational medicine, integrative medicine, behavioral medicine and family medicine.  Additional electives can be arranged both off-site and on-campus for trainees with a specific focus that is not included in the required and elective clinical rotation list.

Clinical Medicine Extended Employment

Trainees who have completed clinical training and are board certified in a primary care specialty have the option of participating in extended employment activities (“moonlighting") that is sanctioned by the UMass Chan Office of Graduate Medical Education. Trainees choosing to participate in moonlighting activities are required to obtain approval of the Program Director and to limit the hours to eight per week. The Program Director encourages trainees to choose activities that are related to preventive medicine and public health.

Moonlighting activities may not be used to fulfill training requirements and may not interfere with Duty Hours requirements.  Extended employment is limited to sites that are approved by the Office of Graduation Medicine Education.  Malpractice is covered for trainees engaged in approved extended employment activities.
