Volunteerism
Members of our department are passionate about volunteerism. Some of the projects in which we are actively involved are highlighted below:
- AAD’s Camp Discovery Connecticut was co-founded and is co-directed by two UMMS dermatology faculty members, Dr. Goldberg and Dr. Wiss. This week-long overnight summer camp experience is designed to create a nurturing and fun environment for children ages 8 to 16 with disabling or disfiguring skin conditions. Our residents get to be medical staff counselors at the camp and participate in this life-changing experience.
- Our department holds an annual skin cancer screening every spring. Residents and other providers help with the detection of skin cancers for our community.
- The annual Teddy Bear Clinic, hosted by UMass Memorial, is staffed by residents, faculty and volunteers. The clinic provides children with an opportunity to have a stuffed animal examined and awarded a certificate of “beary good health” while also exploring kiosks with interactive health information from pediatric subspecialty departments. The pediatric dermatology group offers a kiosk with “fur exams” and sun protection advice.
- Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Levin saw patients monthly at the Metrowest Free Medical Clinic in Sudbury Free Clinics. She will start seeing telehealth visits there soon. There is plenty of opportunity for residents and faculty to participate.
