Call and Consults

We are part of a large hospital system with more than 1,000 beds which provides a rich source for inpatient dermatology education. Consult service responsibilities include coverage of inpatient consults on all adult and pediatric services at both the University and Memorial Campuses including all medical and surgical ICUs, NICU, and PICU, as well as after-hours clinic patients in need of assistance. Consult service responsibilities rotate weekly and the service is staffed by a dedicated dermatology hospitalist, Dr. Nutan. Consults provide the opportunity to see acute, severe dermatologic disease in medically complex patients. It also provides residents time to work with and teach medical students who are assigned for a week of their rotation. Call is distributed across the residents with PGY2s taking approximately 7 weeks, PGY3s 4 weeks and PGY4s 3 weeks. The chief residents help the transition for new dermatology residents who do not take call until October of the academic year. Evenings and weekends are covered by home call by the residents with attending coverage in place for assistance whenever needed.
