Call and Consults

We are part of a large hospital system with more than 1,000 beds which provides a rich source for inpatient dermatology education. Consult service responsibilities include coverage of inpatient consults on all adult and pediatric services at both the University and Memorial Campuses including all medical and surgical ICUs, NICU, and PICU. Call also includes seeing urgent dermatology clinic visits at the Hahnemann Campus, patients in the Emergency Department and phone triage.

Consult service responsibilities for the dermatology residents rotate weekly. First year dermatology residents take about eight weekdays of call and eight weekends.  Second year residents take six weeks of weekday call and five weekends per year.  Third years take four weeks of weekday call and four weekends per year. The chief residents help the transition for new dermatology residents who do not take call until October or November of the academic year.

The weekly consult resident takes beeper call starting on Monday morning through Friday afternoon with attending backup. After-clinic hours are covered by the resident via home call. Most inpatient consultations take place after morning clinics have finished. Residents with an attending cover weekend call from Friday evening until Monday morning.
