Message from the Chancellor

Chancellor Collins

Michael F. Collins, MD
Chancellor, UMass Chan
Senior Vice President for the Health Sciences
University of Massachusetts

This is an exhilarating time at the UMass Chan Medical School (UMass Chan). It is our moment: The time to realize our full potential as an outstanding medical school and research enterprise. The commonwealth’s only public academic health sciences center, UMass Chan has long boasted world-class faculty, students and staff. Now our medical school’s unique strengths, including a top-ranked primary care program and groundbreaking research in some of the most promising biomedical fields, offer important advantages. We are ideally positioned to both equip students for the present and prepare them for the future.

In fall 2010 we launched our new Learner-centered Integrated Curriculum and opened the integrated Teaching and Learning Center (iTLC). Basic sciences and clinical instruction are now interwoven throughout the four years of study and facilitated by cutting-edge interactive technology.

We are expanding rapidly as well. In the summer of 2010 we opened our Ambulatory Care Center (ACC), which was built in collaboration with our clinical partner, UMass Memorial Health Care. An ideal setting for patient care and translational clinical research, the ACC houses four Centers of Excellence in Heart and Vascular, Orthopedics, Diabetes and Cancer led by internationally recognized clinician scientists. This building is a potent symbol of our commitment to transform knowledge into health and to improve the lives of those for whom we have the privilege to care. read more...
