Dr. Bird is the Vice Chair for Education and the Residency Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine. He is a graduate of the Fellowship in Toxicology in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the UMass Chan Medical School. He is a 2002 graduate of the UMass EM Residency Program and served as Chief Resident 2001-2002.
Dr. Bird additionally served in the United States Navy Medical Corps as a Flight Surgeon and researcher in Neurosurgery. He served as a General Surgery intern during 1995-96 at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. He is a 1995 AOA graduate of the Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, IL and graduated Cum Laude from Yale University in 1991.
Dr. Bird is the recipient of:
R21 "Novel Neuromuscular Protection to CounterACT Organophosphorus (OP) Poisoning" a two year NIH grant to invesitgate novel therapies to prevent NMJ dsfunction after OP poisoning.
U01 "Pharmacotherapy to CounterACT Parathion-induced NMJ Dysfunction" 4 year NIH cooperative agreement grant to generate novel model of OP-induced NMJ dysfunction and to investigate a novel pharmacotherapy to prevent NMJ dysfunction.
His interests include medical education, metacognition, toxicology and organophosphorus pesticides.
