What is this course about?
The PCBH Course, Part 2, prepares mental health clinicians to care for primary care patients with complex medical and behavioral needs. Part 2 builds on the foundational skills introduced in PCBH Course, Part 1, and focuses on the care of patients with complex needs as well as advanced skills for team-based practice. These updated courses replace our legacy PCBH Course, which was first launched in 2007 and reflects nearly two decades of experience preparing mental health clinicians to function as full members of primary care teams.
Course participants build core competencies in the identification of behavioral health needs, delivery of brief and flexible interventions that can be adjusted over time, and management of clinical complexity within fast-paced primary care settings.
The course emphasizes behavior change and trauma-informed approaches as foundational principles. Learners strengthen their ability to collaborate with primary care clinicians around medication management, chronic medical and mental health conditions, and the care of patients at risk of suicide. The course centers on aligning care with patient values, supporting longitudinal relationships, and functioning as an effective member of a primary care team.
Our participants become productive and valued contributors on the primary care team, helping their practices embrace integration and provide better, more efficient patient care. Many alumni have become integration leaders and change-makers throughout the US.
Who is this course designed for?
This course is designed for psychologists, clinical social workers, counselors, and marriage and family therapists working in or preparing to work in primary care settings.
Students, recent graduates, and newly licensed clinicians will benefit from structured preparation for integrated care environments.
Clinicians with years of experience who are new to primary care will find this course especially helpful as they adapt their clinical skills to brief visits, population-based care, and collaboration with medical providers.
