John R. Hayes Jr.

Vice Chancellor, Advancement

John HayesJohn Hayes is vice chancellor for advancement at UMass Chan Medical School. In this role, he is responsible for raising private philanthropic support for programs and initiatives and overseeing all alumni and parent relations efforts at the Medical School. Hayes came to UMass Chan in 2007 as a director of individual giving and was named associate vice chancellor for development in 2012.

From 2005 to 2007, Hayes served as the associate vice chancellor of development at UMass Boston, overseeing major gifts, annual fund and planned giving programs. He began his development career in 1995 at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., where he ultimately became the director of the Holy Cross Fund, managing all aspects of annual alumni fundraising, including leadership giving societies, direct mail, telemarketing and reunion giving.

Hayes is a 1991 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, earning a bachelor's degree in history. In 2002, he received his MBA, cum laude, from the F. W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., and was recognized with the Roger Babson Award at graduation. After Babson, he worked for three years at Fidelity Investments in Boston as a treasury project manager supporting corporate business development initiatives, capital planning and bank services. 

To start his career, Hayes spent four years as a surface warfare officer in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the commissioning crew of the USS Vicksburg (CG-69), a guided-missile cruiser home-ported in Mayport, Fla. Onboard Vicksburg, he held positions as the ship’s electrical officer and its missiles officer.
