ProfessorDr. Bird is the Division Director of Medical Toxicology. A graduate of Yale University, Northwestern Medical School, and the UMass emergency medicine residency and medical toxicology program, Dr. Bird has been faculty at UMass since 2004. He has previously served as the residency program director at UMass as well as the President of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine.

Assistant ProfessorDr. Boardman is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and the Fellowship Director for the Emergency Medical Services Fellowship Program. He is also the Associate Medical Director for UMass Memorial Life Flight and Worcester EMS and the Medical Director of the UMass Memorial EMS Communications Center. Dr. Boardman completed his residency in Emergency Medicine through the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and fellowship in Emergency Medical Services through the UMass Chan Medical School. He holds board certifications in both Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services and is a Fellow of both the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Academy of EMS Physicians. Dr. Boardman's academic interests include Aeromedical Transport, Critical Care Transport, Quality Management, and Clinical Operations and Management.

Associate ProfessorDr. Broach completed his residency in Emergency Medicine and fellowship in Disaster Medicine and Emergency Management at UMass Chan Medical School and has served as the Division Director for EMS and Disaster Medicine since 2018. He also serves as a Medical Officer on the Federal DMAT MA-2 and has extensive experience with disaster response planning and deployment. He currently serves as the Region 2 EMS Medical Director and has published extensively on topics related to both EMS and Disaster Medicine.

Assistant ProfessorDr Canellas is an emergency medicine physician. She is also the associate chief medical officer for UMass Memorial Medical Center. She serves on multiple administrative and operations committees. Her areas of interest include using AI/ML to improve operations, flow, and efficiency, healthcare finance research, and general data analytics.

Jennifer Lee Carey MD
Associate ProfessorDr. Carey is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and a medical toxicologist. She is the Director or Undergraduate Medical Education in the Emergency Department. She is the Education Fellowship Director, BOLD-EM co-director, and Clinical Applications co-director. Dr. Carey serves on the Board of Directors for the national organization Clerkship Directors in Emergency MEdicine (CDEM).

Guy Carmelli MD
Assistant ProfessorDr. Carmelli is a graduate of the Emergency Medicine residency program at Kings County and SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, where he also completed his two-year Medical Education Fellowship. He furthered his medical education knowledge by completing a two-year Masters in Medical Education at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his medical degree at USC’s Keck School of Medicine in California, where he grew up. His interests are in medical education, where he has spent most of his time. He is an enthusiastic teacher both in the clinical setting and in the lecture hall. He was awarded “best resident”, the first-place award for the CPC National Competition at ACEP in 2016 and again as “best attending” in Sri Lanka at the World Academic Congress of Emergency Medicine (WACEM) conference in 2017. He has since lectured for numerous national conferences, all over the United States. Currently, he has a full-time academic faculty position here at the University of Massachusetts, where he is pursuing his various interests in education.

Stephanie Pepper Carreiro MD PhD FACEP FACMT
Associate ProfessorDr. Carreiro is an emergency medicine physician, medical toxicologist and digital health researcher. She is a 2009 graduate of New York Medical College, and completed her emergency medicine residency in 2013 at Brown University. She completed a medical toxicology fellowship in 2015, and received a PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2022, both at the University of Massachusetts. She is currently an Associate Professor, Director of the Tox(In)novation Lab, and Research Director in the Department of Emergency Medicine at University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. Her current research program focuses on developing digital therapeutics for substance use disorder, understanding how patients use and engage with technology, and leveraging digital technology to promote health equity. She is the principal investigator multiple industry and federally funded research grants, including several awards from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering.

Assistant ProfessorDr. Chinai completed a combined 6-year BA/MD program between Rutgers and New Jersey Medical School and completed residency at Johns Hopkins for Emergency Medicine. She has been an attending physician for over a decade, credentialed at the following campuses: University, Memorial, HealthAlliance and Clinton. In her practice, she takes care of a diverse, high acuity group of patients in the Emergency Department, delivering compassionate care to people in their time of greatest of need. -

He mentors EM residents as well as UMass Chan medical students and serves a variety of local committees and programs including the UMass Chan Graduate Medical Education Committee, the SNMA Mentorship Program and the Committee on Equal Opportunity and Diversity as well as national committees such as the ACMT Diversity Workgroup and the CORD-EM Advising Students Committee.

Assistant ProfessorDr. Davis-Martin is a clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine and Community Health. She has diverse clinical experience in a variety of medical settings, including the emergency department (ED), primary care, and hospital-based specialty clinics. She is predominantly a researcher with several NIH grants focused on enhancing detection of suicidality, using innovative technology to increase access to evidence-based treatments for suicide risk, using wearable biosensors to improve monitoring of alcohol withdrawal and detoxification, and improving care transitions throughout the healthcare system.In addition to her research, as Director of the UMass ED’s Behavioral Health Service, she supervises clinicians providing SBIRT in the UMass ED system for patients with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders. She also provides clinical care at Hahnemann Family Health Center as an integrated behavioral health provider. Her clinical interests and expertise include mindfulness- and acceptance-based behavior therapies, evidence-based suicide prevention, health behavior change, motivational interviewing, sleep disorders, and LGBTQIA+ care. -

Assistant ProfessorDr. DeLeo is Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine. As an emergency physician, first and foremost her priority and goal is to deliver safe, outstanding and patient/family-centered clinical care. She also enjoys a special focus on medical student and resident education. She serves as a House Mentor within the Medical School, working closely with her mentees to teach applicable clinical skills and reasoning, as well as to holistically optimize their learning and personal growth during medical school. She greatly values working closely with residents on-shift, helping them to develop confidence and autonomy. She will be serving as course director for the 4th year emergency medicine clerkship ECPS. Charlotte is honored to work beside her highly collaborative, supportive and team-oriented colleagues both within the entire UMass Department of Emergency Medicine as well as within UMass Chan Medical School.

ProfessorDr Gaspari is the Executive Vice Chair of Academic Affairs and a Professor in Emergency Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School. He previously served as the Ultrasound Division Director along with other Departmental leadership roles. He is active in Bedside Ultrasound Research and has published a number of clinical trials exploring ultrasound in soft tissue infection, echocardiography in cardiac arrest, and doppler in resuscitation. Dr. Gaspari is the primary investigator for the research group REASON, responsible for the largest clinical trials in ultrasound for cardiac arrest. He co-founded the Society of Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships, the largest POCUS fellowship society in the United States. He founded EUFAC, the national accrediting body for Advanced Emergency Ultrasound Fellowships. Dr Gaspari's lab was funded for research in neurophysiology exploring the link between organophosphate poisoning and respiratory failure.

Assistant ProfessorDr. Ibrahim trained at the University at Buffalo in Emergency Medicine and has been at UMass since 2014. He has a strong interest in resident and student education, particularly with the use if high fidelity simulation. Over the years, he has been fortunate to serve in various education leadership positions including the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Medical Education and the Director of Resident Simulation. Dr. Ibrahim's clinical and research interests are in septic shock and suicide prevention. He currently works as a full-time clinician at both Marlborough Hospital and Clinton Hospital. His hobbies and interests involve traveling the world with my family, financial management, and football. He is a huge Buffalo Bills fan.

Associate ProfessorDr. Irons is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at University of Massachusetts. She received her MD from Medical College of Georgia, PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Georgia Tech/Emory, and EM residency at Michigan State University. She completed Wilderness Medicine Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital during which she working at the Himalayan Rescue Association in Nepal, trip physician to the Siberian arctic, and doing multiple research projects. She teaches 2 UMass Wilderness Medicine student electives and is the faculty advisor for the UMass Wilderness Medicine Interest Group (WMIG) and the New England Wilderness Medicine Conference (NEWMC). She is the Faculty Director of the local Massachusetts MedWAR (Medical Wilderness Adventure Race) and has been on the Board of Directors for the national nonprofit MedWAR for over 20 years. She has also held leadership roles in Wilderness Medicine in national organizations and is currently a Clinical Practice Guidelines Section Editor for the Wilderness and Environmental Medicine Journal. She has research interests in high altitude illness, hypothermia and frostbite, nature as medicine, healthcare sustainability, and traumatic brain injury. She enjoys cycling, climbing, skiing, camping, and being outdoors.

Assistant ProfessorAs a clinical researcher and emergency physician, Dr. Kan's work centers on pharmacoepidemiology, trauma care, and quality improvement. His focus is on evaluating the safety and effectiveness of healthcare interventions for older adults and medically complex populations, with particular attention to trauma care and addressing disparities in anticoagulant and reversal agent use. By leveraging large-scale administrative data and advanced statistical methods, his long-term goal is to advance patient-centered care by identifying disparities, improving care delivery, and informing evidence-based policies that enhance health outcomes and equity.

He serves as the program director of the medical toxicology fellowship and the clerkship director for the Introduction to Medical Toxicology medical student elective.Dr. Lai completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley; medical school at the University of Pittsburgh; and emergency medicine residency and medical toxicology fellowship at the University of Massachusetts. His academic interests include medical education, the application of novel technologies to the treatment of substance use disorders, and the surveillance of impairing substances in patients with traumatic injuries. -

Assistant ProfessorDr. Lerner graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in 2007 and completed his Emergency Medicine residency at UMass Medical Center in 2010. Since then, he has worked in numerous community EDs across Massachusetts from level 3 trauma facilities to critical access hospitals. In 2018 he completed a graduate certificate program at UMass Boston in Health Informatics. He is particularly interested in ED efficiency and LWBS. Outside the hospital Dr. Lerner enjoys tennis, woodworking, and photography.

Dr. Milsten coordinates and runs the NDLSF training programs at UMass, specifically BDLS and ADLS. He was also instrumental in organizing and founding the New England Society of Disaster Medicine (NESDM).

As an nocturnist EM attending physician as well as an EMS/DM physician, he is the medical director for multiple local fire departments, is the Course Director for Disaster Day, is a telehealth provider with the Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) program, is involved in all levels of medical education, and is involved with many other projects.
