Swift, generous support drives COVID-19 and related virus research
In early 2020, SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, changed life as we know it, causing a global pandemic the likes of which hadn’t been seen in an age. UMass Chan Medical School responded rapidly by mobilizing its groundbreaking research platform to achieve understanding of this novel coronavirus—and philanthropic individuals and foundations were just as immediate in providing their support.
The medical school’s ability to refocus so quickly is rooted in its research achievements in virology, immunology, host response, drug design and advanced therapeutics. As a result, more than 19 UMMS labs shifted their efforts in the pandemic’s early days to work on COVID-19 and related virus research. In concert, donors and foundations from near and far contributed nearly $3 million to support these activities.
The stories below describe a few of the many notable COVID-19 related projects that were launched between May 1 and June 30, 2020, and how philanthropy is strengthening the work.
