Kristyn Norris
, a PhD student in the Munson lab, has been selected to receive a student community service award to be presented at the 2019 Student Awards Ceremony on May 30, 2019. The award recognizes students who have gone above and beyond program requirements for community service.

Kristyn has served along with Sumeet Nayak (also being honored) as GSBC community service co-chair for the academic year. During this time, Kristyn has helped coordinate and promote various events including a promotional video for the 2018 UMass Cancer Walk highlighting faculty and students involved in cancer research or that have been impacted by cancer in their own personal lives. In collaboration with ArtReach, Kristyn also helped organize a paint night event that raised close to $1000 for YWCA which will help with community engagement initiatives to end domestic violence in Worcester. Kristyn has also been involved with helping form a peer mentoring community for incoming first year students as they try to navigate graduate school. Additionally, Kristyn is a part of the Best Buddies program at UMass Medical School which matches students with local adults with special needs. The program holds monthly events to help build a community and facilitate long lasting relationships for all those involved.

Kristyn plans to continue her involvement with community service and engagement throughout her graduate career and hopes to develop it into a career in outreach science. Her current thesis work studies the membrane trafficking regulator VPS45, its role in the cell, and its role in the maintenance of the innate immune system.
