Continuing the theme of finding joy in education, this Education Grand Rounds session focused on the joy of feedback through assessing progress in pathways. Patricia Seymour, MD, Clinical Assistant Dean for Early and Advanced Clinical Curricula at the T.H. Chan School of Medicine, and Anthony Imbalzano, PhD, Associate Dean for Postdoctoral Scholars and Academic Affairs at the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, shared insights on how assessment models for readiness and progression can create opportunities for clarity and even accelerated pathways.

Assessing Teaching Beyond Student Evaluation: Getting to Joy

This session invited participants to move beyond student evaluations as the primary measure of teaching effectiveness. After highlighting the limitations and biases of relying on student feedback, participants explored additional approaches to assessing teaching that encourage growth and improvement. The session emphasized that assessment can be more than surveillance and can instead contribute to educator development, enhanced teaching effectiveness, improved learner outcomes, and renewed purpose and joy in teaching.
