There are 2 ways you can experience pediatric hematology/oncology: inpatient on the Red team and an optional outpatient elective.

During your rotations, you can refer to this list of goals/topics to focus on:

  1. Demonstrates an understanding of the pathogenesis, complications and treatment of the following frequent hematological or oncologic disease conditions:
    • Congenital or acquired hypoplastic anemias, nutritional anemias, hemolytic anemias, congenital or acquired neutropenias, coagulation disorders, thrombocytopenias, leukemias, lymphomas, brain tumors, Wilms’, Neuroblastoma, sarcomas, fever and neutropenia, line sepsis
  2. Demonstrates an understanding of:
    • blood product support (e.g. red blood cell and platelet transfusions)
    • cytokines (e.g. erythropoetin, GCSF)
    • chemotherapeutic drugs including side effects and clinical uses of antimetabolites, alkylating agents, anthracyclines, platinum compounds and steroids
  3. Demonstrates understanding of the basic elements of supportive care including:
    • pain control
    • PCP prophylaxis
    • fungal prophylaxis
    • central line care
  4. Be able to interpret coagulation laboratory results to diagnose various bleeding diathesis
