Hematology Oncology
Hematology Oncology Goals and Objectives can be found here.
There are 2 ways you can experience pediatric hematology/oncology: inpatient on the Red team and an optional outpatient elective.
As you join/re-join the inpatient Red team, please be sure to:
- Check out these Resident Tips for your time on Red Team
- Refresh your knowledge on heme/onc emergencies with this lecture by Dr. Stefanie Lowas
- Familiarize yourself with guidelines in caring for patient with sickle cell disease on the New England Pediatric Sickle Cell Consortium site
In the outpatient setting, be sure to:
- Review hematology topics listed below, as these are more common in the clinic
During your rotations, you can refer to this list of goals/topics to focus on:
- Demonstrates an understanding of the pathogenesis, complications and treatment of the following frequent hematological or oncologic disease conditions:
- Congenital or acquired hypoplastic anemias, nutritional anemias, hemolytic anemias, congenital or acquired neutropenias, coagulation disorders, thrombocytopenias, leukemias, lymphomas, brain tumors, Wilms’, Neuroblastoma, sarcomas, fever and neutropenia, line sepsis
- Demonstrates an understanding of:
- blood product support (e.g. red blood cell and platelet transfusions)
- cytokines (e.g. erythropoetin, GCSF)
- chemotherapeutic drugs including side effects and clinical uses of antimetabolites, alkylating agents, anthracyclines, platinum compounds and steroids
- Demonstrates understanding of the basic elements of supportive care including:
- pain control
- PCP prophylaxis
- fungal prophylaxis
- central line care
- Be able to interpret coagulation laboratory results to diagnose various bleeding diathesis
