Health Equity and Advocacy

Welcome to the Health Equity and Advocacy elective!! Here are your Goals & Objectives. This elective is led dy Dr. Nisha Fahey.  Please plan to meet with her 2-4 weeks prior to your start date so that you can discuss your specific areas of interest, discuss your goals, and plan your elective activities.   

You'll be using this list of community experiences and contacts during your rotation. You might be interested to see clips from the 2023 Child Health Equity Conference. And! The Health Equity Center has launched a Slack Community where you can select channels of interest to stay up to date on community events, resources, and more. Do check it out!

Find the general goals of this rotation below (from which you'll choose what you'd like to focus on):

Goal 1: Provide equitable healthcare for children from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds

Goal 2: Understand the social, economic, environmental and cultural factors that impact health (Social Determinants of Health)

Goal 3: Understand racial and ethnic health disparities, the historical context of inequities in the United States, and how systemic racism contributes to bias, discrimination, and health outcomes in the current healthcare system

Goal 4: Investigate how families in Worcester access the health care system and social services

Goal 5: Learn about, meet, and get ideas on how to collaborate with community and regional resources for families. Add new and update “old” resources on our list!

Goal 6: Formulate a framework for how physicians can be advocates for child health on the individual, community, and/or policy levels

Goal 7: Gain skills presenting, teaching, researching, or writing about child health equity
