Residency Program Celebrates Successful Match

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at UMass Memorial Medical Center and the UMass Chan Medical School welcomes two exceptional candidates to its Ophthalmology Residency Program. After a lengthy selection process, performed with the help of the department’s dedicated faculty and current residents and under the direction of Residency Program Director Misha Faustina, MD, and Anita Amin, Residency Program Coordinator, two outstanding students stood out among hundreds of qualified applicants and were awarded the coveted spots.Please join us in congratulating and welcoming both of our residents:Derek Metcalfe – Derek graduated from Tufts University and is now a fourth-year medical student at Tufts University School of Medicine. He is interested in corneal diseases and was involved in cornea research at Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston.Christina Kim – Christina graduated from Wellesley College, earned a degree in biomedical engineering from UCLA, and is currently a fourth-year medical student at Boston University School of Medicine. She is interested in academic ophthalmology and has experience in basic lab research at the Gong Lab and at the Subramanian Lab at Boston University School of Medicine.“I couldn’t be prouder of the process that we put in place, which was holistic, transparent, fair, inclusive, virtual and … successful!” wrote Shlomit Schaal, MD, PhD, MHCM, Chair of the department, President of the UMass Memorial Medical Group and Senior Associate Dean for Health Strategies at the Medical School. “Seeing their bright smiles and the excited sparkle in their eyes has made my day! It was a glimpse into our future!” Dr. Schaal noted that this group of residents will be the first class to spend four years at the Medical Center/Medical School with one integrated internship year and three years of residency training.In recognition of the hard work that goes into the residency recruitment efforts, the entire Eye Team was treated to a celebratory luncheon for a job well done!
