His writing has appeared in The New York Times and The Washington Post. Originally from central Illinois, he earned a degree in history from Yale before attending medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by residency and fellowship at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. In his fascinating Vision Seminar he examined the remarkable contributions of three unsung heroes: Dr. Harold Ridley, Dr. Charles Kelman, and Louis Braille. All three endured severe ridicule and scorn for their new ideas, which ultimately changed the way we see and benefitted all of mankind.
