A significant construction project to improve pedestrian traffic at the South Road Garage will begin on Monday, Sept. 21.
Drivers and pedestrians are urged to pay special attention to temporary signage and to the direction of UMass Medical School Public Safety officers to help manage the flow of traffic during this time.
Construction will proceed in phases, beginning with demolition of the curbs, sidewalks and median strips in the road, as well as installation of new stormwater drainage infrastructure for that area. The demolition phase is expected to take one week, with work occurring from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. to limit impact on daytime traffic.
After demolition, work will shift to regular daytime hours, approximately 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with reconstruction of the north side of the corridor (closest to the Benedict Building). When that area is completed, construction will shift to the south side (closer to the garage) and vehicle traffic will be shifted north to the new roadway.
During construction, pedestrians will be detoured around the site on temporary walkways and crosswalks established on either end of the work area. Two-way vehicle traffic on the road will be maintained at all times. The design includes new lighting, plantings and a raised crosswalk extending from the garage lobby to the covered walkway on the north side.
The work is expected to continue through Nov. 20.
