Shlomit Schaal, MD, PhD, is focused on improving the way diabetic retinopathy is diagnosed in patients. As she explained in a new Voices of UMassMed podcast, diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of vision loss in people with diabetes, and early detection can prevent blindness.
“We have the technology now to image the eye in a noninvasive way,” said Dr. Schaal, chair and professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences.
Schaal said eye health is important for all patients, not only those with diabetic retinopathy and provides advice on how to keep the eyes healthy at every age.
