LISTEN: Elinor Karlsson explains how dog DNA aids human research

Elinor Karlsson, PhD, assistant professor of molecular medicine, has spent her career examining genomic data to better understand human disease. In a new episode of the Voices of UMassMed podcast,Dr. Karlsson explained why she has turned to dog owners to help with a large genomic research project at UMass Medical School.

“Dog owners are not super surprised by this, but it turns out that dogs and people are not as different as sometimes we think they’re going to be,” Karlsson said in the podcast. “And so, by studying the genetics of dogs, we actually learn about human genetics as well.”
