Danaë Alexandrou, undergraduate student, summarizes her summer at the Eye Center

Date Posted: Wednesday, August 22, 2018

Working in the Eye Center offered me more than I could have hoped for this summer. Assigned to two research projects to advance, I thought that I would strictly be recruiting patients and taking retinal photos to be analyzed.

While doing that, I also had the opportunity to shadow physicians, learn pathology, attend a surgical skills lab and incorporate my passion for public health all within the Eye Center. This internship provided me with challenges that allowed me to utilize the resources around me, as well as work independently to progress the projects.

The Eye Center provided me a closer look into ophthalmology and what it is like to work in health care. With medical students rotating through and a diverse patient population to work with, I was fully immersed in a great learning environment within the Eye Center. In this environment I learned from my peers and viewed my research from various perspectives.

I thoroughly enjoyed my summer and I am appreciative of the knowledge it has brought me and the relationships made. From learning and receiving help from physicians, technicians, and the front desk, I felt as though I was part of the team by the end of the summer.

I am looking forward to watching the Eye Center grow and keeping in touch while I am in school.

Thank you for a great summer!
