UMass Eye Center Welcomes Inaugural Class of Ophthalmology Residents

The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the UMass Chan Medical School is pleased to welcome inaugural class of ophthalmology residents.

Soraiya Thura, MD, completed her undergraduate degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, where she received a B.S. in Economics in the Honors College. She went on to obtain her medical degree at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, where she was recognized for her commitment to advocacy for the University and her high regard for compassionate care of patients. This was followed by completion of a general surgery internship at George Washington University. She is interested in pursuing a career in academic Ophthalmology with a focus on innovations in ophthalmic surgery, and has a passion for medical education. 

Saad Al-Kadhi, MD, MS. Earned his medical and master’s degrees from Al-Nahrain University, Baghdad, Iraq, before going on to Ophthalmology Residency at the University Hospital in Baghdad. He completed his general surgery internship in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston Salem, North Carolina, and completed his research observership in the Ophthalmology Department, Columbia University, New York, before joining the Ophthalmology Residency Program at the University of Massachusetts. He aspires to be part of an exceptional academic ophthalmology center and to contribute to superb patient care, research, and medical education.
