Vision Seminar Series hosts Dr. Sayon Roy, Ph.D., a renowned researcher in the area of Diabetic Retinopathy

Date Posted: Monday, October 23, 2017

On Thursday October 19, 2017 the Vision Seminar Series was very pleased to host the guest speaker, Sayon Roy Ph.D., who is a world-renowned scientist in the field of diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy remains leading cause for vision impairment in both developed and developing countries affecting over 600 million worldwide. Despite effective anti-angiogenic therapies to treat the advanced neovascular form of diabetic retinopathy many people still lose sight due to late intervention. Most individuals are often not aware that they have diabetes and by the time their blood sugar levels are under control the disease has already progressed to a more serious stage.

Dr. Roy shared his research on early changes in the basement membrane of diabetic patients that precede the more advanced pathology that leads to neovascularization. His research highlighted the molecular player involved in basement membrane thickening and how to potentially manipulate them in order to delay the transition the neovascular form.
