Date Posted: Saturday, October 19, 2019

The newly established residency program at the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences attracted more than 400 applications. Top candidates were selected to interview.

The interview day showcased Eye Center’s cutting edge facilities at the Hahnemann campus, and the newly renovated research space at the UMass Chan Medical School. Candidates visited UMass simulation center that hosts new advanced eye simulators for training residents in physical exam and in eye surgery.

Residency candidates were hosted for a special dinner. Dr. Terry Flotte, Dean of UMass Chan Medical School, greeted the candidates and highlighted the high quality of research and education at UMass. Tim Tarnowski, Chief Transformation Officer and Chief Information Officer at UMass Memorial Healthcare talked about Lean Management and the fact that UMass reached HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 for both inpatient and outpatient setting - a feat accomplished by only 2% of healthcare systems nationwide. Dr. Steve Tosi, President of UMass Memorial Medical Group talked about the Worcester area and emphasized the rapid growth of the UMass Eye Center to become the main provider of eye care to the Worcester community, while maintaining highest physicians and staff engagement scores.

Dr. Shlomit Schaal, Chair of the department said: “our program can be summarized in 3 things: (1) we are like family - we deeply care about each other (2) we are a startup program - we are nimble, we are in continuous progress and evolution and (3) we are committed to our missions of providing best eye care, executing cutting edge research, teaching the next generation, and reaching out to our community”.
