Successful launch of Vision Seminar Series at UMass Ophthalmology
Date Posted: Friday, August 19, 2016The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the UMass Chan Medical School launches a NEW Vision Seminar Series that is open to the public inviting practicing ophthalmologists form the surrounding neighborhoods to share their experiences and knowledge with scientists and clinicians of the Department of Ophthalmology.
The inaugural seminar was a big success with around 40 attendees including prominent ophthalmologists from surrounding towns of the Worcester area. The goal of the seminar series is to exchange knowledge and foster collaborations between scientists and clinicians in order to drive research forward that promotes better long-term patient care. A faculty member of the Ophthalmology Department held the first presentation of the seminar series.
Dr. Claudio Punzo, who is Ph.D. scientist, spoke about the role of the Insulin/mTOR signaling in rods & cones and the lessons that can be drawn from it with regards to Diabetic Retinopathy and Age related Macular degeneration. The presentation stimulated a lot of discussions and rethinking in the way diabetic patients are managed in the clinic. Read more about part of the science that was presented in the seminar.
The seminar Series will take place every 3rd Thursday of the month starting at 5.30 pm and will be held in on the 6th floor of the Albert Sherman Center in room AS6-2072. Pizza’s and refreshments will be provided by the Department of Ophthalmology.
