Vision Seminar Series hosts Dr. Emily Chew, immediate past president of ARVO

June's honorable guest speaker was Dr. Emily Chew, a world-renowned medical retina expert. Dr. Chew is the deputy director of the Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Applications and the deputy clinical director at the National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Dr. Chew discussed important clinical and research applications of the ACCORD and ACCORDION studies, which defined the risk of progression of diabetic retinopathy in patients. Dr. Chew described the progress made in this field over the past two decades, and emphasized the effects of tight control of blood sugar, blood pressure and lipid concentration in the blood on diabetic eye disease.
