Spring Retreat - Stepping Up Standards of Respect
Date Posted: Sunday, May 26, 2019The Eye Team’s Spring Retreat was all about teamwork and stepping up our standards of respect.
Dr. Lin and Laura Flynn did a great job reminding us all that we should embrace the diversity and the inherent differences among us and that we should all be looking in the mirror often to see if there is anything we, ourselves, can do to help the team.
Some things that the Eye Team decided to do during the retreat:
CONTINUE: believing in the power of the Eye Team, being proud of our amazing achievements, keeping our patients first, innovating, problem solving. START: smiling, communicating, meditating, going out for activities in the community, and playing Bob Marley. STOP: ignoring people in the hallway (look up from your phone!), stop blaming others, and before complaining check if you, yourself, can do something different to make things better for everyone.
Dr. Michael Gustafson, President of UMass Memorial Medical Center, was the retreat’s guest speaker and gave a comprehensive, inspiring talk highlighting the great improvement in patients’ safety and patients’ experience in UMass Memorial Medical Center.
Sharon Furbish and Christine Vallee won the semi-annual Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Award of Excellence for their commitment and service to the Eye Center. Christine Vallee said: “Dr. Schaal and Eye Center – It has been my pleasure working with each of you over the past 3 years. You are a model for other clinics in the medical center! I will still be keeping my “eye” on the team and your future growth and successes!”.
New American citizens were celebrated as well: Dr. Khanna, Dr. Ding, Manisha Anand, and Dr. Schaal.
Dr. Ding summarized her JFDP project focused on establishing an Eye Center at the ACC. Jodie Grady and Nina Walsh presented the marketing team’s efforts to promote the Eye Center at all three locations.
Dr. Schaal said: “overall, we have a fantastic team! I feel so privileged and grateful to be working with such motivated, innovative, compassionate and beautiful people”.
