The Neurointerventional Radiology Division at UMass Memorial has its roots starting in 2006 when this was the only Neurointerventional Program in central Massachusetts. Since then the division has grown to include 4 attending physicians, two fellows, and 6mid-level care providers with a goal of being leaders in Neurointerventional therapy.

The current Director of the Neurointerventional Fellowship Program, Dr. Jasmeet Singh, is widely published and has research interests in stroke and flow diversion. He is the coinvestigator of numerous national and international trials and registries at UMass Memorial Medical Center, offering advanced and minimally invasive techniques to treat cerebrovascular diseases.

The division chief of the Neurointerventional Radiology is Dr. Ajit S. Puri. He has many publications in peer-reviewed journals, is one of the most highly experienced interventionalists in using flow diversion, and has research interests include optical coherence tomography for image guided treatment of cerebrovascular disease, characterization of mechanical thrombectomy technology for treatment of acute stroke, and minimally invasive treatment of brain aneurysms.He is the principal investigator of numerous national and international trials and registries at UMass Memorial Medical Center, offering advanced and minimally invasive techniques to treat cerebrovascular diseases. UMass Memorial Medical Center is the only center to offer these novel therapies, not only in Massachusetts, but in the New England region.

Program Goals

The goal of the Neurointerventional Radiology Division of UMass Memorial Health Center is to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art, minimally invasive care to patients with vascular diseases of the brain and spine including stroke, aneurysm, arteriovenous malformations, vascular stenosis, and spinal abnormalities.

Research

The extensive facilities within the New England Center for Stroke Research provide a variety of opportunities for fellows to participate in basic and translational research in Neurointerventional.

In addition, the Neurointerventional Radiology Division is actively involved in clinical research with recent participation in over 15 trials and registries. The Division also has a full time clinical research coordinator who is involved in all trials and registries. The Division is involved in several multi-center publication efforts in stroke and aneurysm research.

Conferences

  • Every Tuesday there is an interdisciplinary conference that includes the division of neurology, neurosurgery, and radiology held to review imaging and case findings, as well as establish a clinical plan for patients with challenging cerebrovascular disorders.
  • Radiology and Neurology Grand Rounds are held throughout the year with visiting and local professors offering the opportunity to meet and learn from leading national authorities on a wide variety of topics.
  • Every Wednesday afternoon, the disciplines of Neurointervention, Trauma, Neurosurgery and Neurointensivist’s meet for the NeuroICU conference to discuss management of all NeuroICU patients.
  • Every Friday morning, the division of Neurointerventional Surgery has its clinical meeting to discuss the various trials and registries. In addition, potential projects and publications are discussed as well. Every Friday afternoon, NECStR research meeting is held to discuss progress of ongoing ventures, discuss collaborations with various other local, national and international leaders. Potential new projects are also discussed between the various participants. These platforms offer the seamless transition from basic science to clinical science.
  • The NECStR lab serves as a physician training site for multiple interventional devices and hosts several guest lecturers each year, providing additional opportunities for fellows to learn and advance technical skills. 

Imaging Facilities / Locations

Our facilities include two, state-of-the-art angiography suites with flat-panel detector x‑ray systems. Both suites have bi-plane angiographic capabilities, allowing the interventionalists to work in two angiographic views simultaneously and also include the capability for 3-dimensional reconstruction angiography (3DRA) and X-per™ Cone Beam Computed tomography. One suite houses an angiography program (Clarity) that delivers enhancements in radiographic image quality that ultimately allows a significant reduction in radiation dose (up to 70%) for patients and operators.

The close research partnership with the well-known New England Stroke Center for Research (NECStR), directed by Matthew Gounis, PhD, provides a unique opportunity for collaboration and participation in basic and translational research. The NECStR lab features a state-of-the art angiosurgical suite that is fully equipped for aseptic surgical and interventional procedures and imaging technology that mirrors the clinical angiosurgical suites. In addition, the 3T Philips Achieva MR Scanner that is located next to the suite in the Advanced MR Imaging Center provides additional multi-modal imaging acquisition capabilities. The Center also includes a chemistry and hemodynamic lab and small animal imaging capabilities.

Requirements:
Applicants must have completed a radiology residency program accredited by the ACGME by the time they begin their fellowship at UMMMC. Applicants must be certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or equivalent. Acceptance is contingent on obtaining an unrestricted Massachusetts medical license by start date of Fellowship.
