Dr. Raju Rajala discusses how photoreceptors cope with high energy demands to maintain their metabolism and health
Date Posted: Sunday, March 24, 2019The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at UMass Chan Medical School kicked off spring with our distinguished vision seminar speaker Dr. Raju V.S. Rajala, PhD, M.G. McCool Chair in Ophthalmology and Professor of Physiology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Rajala presented his groundbreaking research on the parallels between cancer metabolism and photoreceptor degenerative diseases. He presented his research on examining the role of pyruvate kinase M2, a critical enzyme of a cell’s respiratory pathway. Dr. Rajala also discussed how modulating the activity of this enzyme would be beneficial for photoreceptor survival.
