First Ophthalmology Kaizen Event at the Eye Center

Date Posted: Friday, August 31, 2018

The department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences held the first Rapid Improvement session (Kaizen event) entitled: “Operational Excellence at the Eye Center: Achieving Alignment and Enabling Innovation”.

Kaizen events are short duration improvement projects with a specific aim for improvement; typically they are events led by a facilitator with the implementation team being predominantly members of the area in which the kaizen event is being conducted plus a few additional people from support areas and even management.

The Ophthalmology Kaizen event was focused around improving efficiency and productivity in two areas: the oculoplastics service, and the diabetes eye disease screening service at the ACC.

Facilitators Lori Pelletier, Nick Comeau, and Arif Kassam from CITC led the vivid discussion within the two focus groups into achieving an agreement around a common goal, and identifying metrics that will allow progress towards achieving the goal.
