News & Views for 3D NGenuity system

Date Posted: Thursday, March 02, 2017

UMass Memorial retina surgeons were among the first in the nation to use a new technology for complex vitreoretinal (retina) surgery. The novel Alcon NGenuity 3D Visualization System features a high-definition 3D viewing screen linked to two High Dynamic Range (HDR) cameras that provide excellent resolution, image depth, clarity and color contrast.

With the three-dimensional view, the surgeon now has depth perception not previously available on standard television monitors, often used today in the operation theatre.

The system allows retinal surgeons to operate looking at a high definition 3D screen, instead of bending their necks to look through the eye-piece of a microscope. Surgeons operate using 3D glasses to perform these delicate intra-ocular procedures that are projected and magnified on a high resolution 4K screen.

UMass Memorial is a teaching institution, where leading academicians teach the next generation of eye surgeons. The new system is designed to facilitate collaboration and teaching in the operating room, as everyone present in the operating room can see in great detail what the main surgeon is doing.
