Laboratory Rotations

1. Students are expected to spend 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters and full time (at least 40 hours per week) during the summer on laboratory rotations. Sponsoring faculty should use their discretion and take under consideration the course load of the student at the time of the rotation.
2. At the conclusion of the rotation, the student is encouraged to give an oral presentation to the IMP students and faculty. An exception to this is made during the spring semester of the second year due to the burden of preparing for the qualifying exam. Each student should give a total of two rotation talks:
   1st year students – give rotation talks at the beginning of the spring semester on rotations performed during the summer entry or during the fall semester.
   2nd year students – give rotation talks at the beginning of the fall semester on rotations performed in the spring or summer of the first year.
3. At the conclusion of the rotation, the student will submit a report, as described in the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Handbook (http://inside.umassmed.edu/gsbs/information.aspx) to the sponsor. A copy of this will be sent to the Graduate School Office and kept in the file of the student.
4. The faculty sponsor of the rotation will prepare a written evaluation of the student and put this into the student’s file in the Graduate School Office.
5. The IMP offers rotations at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine for students interested in mouse genetics or other research programs in that institution.
