Care Team Spotlight: Asem Ali, MD - Endocrinologist

Dr. Asem Ali earned his medical degree from Omdurman Islamic University in Sudan.  He completed his fellowship training program at the National Institutes of Health followed by a residency at Texas Tech University School of Medicine.

Dr. Ali has been an endocrinologist at the UMass Diabetes Center of Excellence (DCOE) and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the the UMass Chan Medical School since 2014.  He’s Director of Diabetes Services at Health Alliance Fitchburg Family Practice and the Multidisciplinary Center in Leominster, where spends part of his week leading their care teams with the Community Diabetes Partnership Program.  Dr. Ali also helps to oversee diabetes care for inpatients at Worcester’s UMass Memorial hospitals with the Inpatient Blood Glucose Management program

In addition to type 1 & type 2 diabetes, his interests include lipid disorders and obesity, weight gain and regain.
 
In the following video, Dr. Ali points out some of the serious health complications caused by uncontrolled blood sugars.  He describes the team approach to diabetes care at UMass Memorial Health, where people are cared for by an endocrinologist, nurse practitioner and diabetes educator. Access to other specialists is available based on the individual’s needs.
