PI USA: Dr. Nisha Fahey, Dr. Heena Santry
PI India: Dr. Shirish Srivastava
Trainee: Dr. Brittany Novak, Dr. Abraha Jaffee, Dr. Maunil Bhatt
Objective:
To identify the community-level injury burden through household surveys and determine types of injuries and outcomes via implementation of a trauma registry.
Background:
This was the first RAHI-SATHI project fully led by a new trainee. A surgical resident spent two dedicated years conducting this research across UMMS and CAM. An acute care surgeon and a team of surgeons and community-medicine faculty supported the trainee in all community and hospital-level activities. The project was funded by a $35,000 UMMS OGH pilot grant and received in-kind logistical support from CAM.
Outcomes:
- Established a trauma registry and injury surveillance system in a rural setting
- Highlighted burden of road traffic injuries and gaps in emergency care
- Created a model for trainee-led research in injury prevention
- Strengthened collaboration between surgery and public health faculty across institutions
