NICU
Heading over to Memorial for some teeny-tiny snuggles? Some information to get you started:
- Goals and Objectives
- For everything you need: NICU Handbook
- For quick reference, the NICU Survivial Guide (2025 edition)
- Surgeon Handoff Template
You'll want to review this NICU Orientation presentation by Dr. Martin (30 min Zoom) prior to starting your rotation, as it will help orient you on day 1. It includes a link demonstrating how to use a Neopuff Ventilator.
More specific learning for you includes:
- NICU Bootcamp! Click to find multiple high yield episodes to get you acquainted/re-acquainted with NICU basics
- Susan Tripp, the NICU dietician: Neonatal Nutrition lecture (1 hour; 2022) (copy of slides)
- Dr. Kirsti Martin: Early onset sepsis (45 min; 2022)
You can also check out this website the NICU has created for students. You'll find a great video of how to do a newborn exam (the same OpenPediatrics website has a TON of other learning, too), as well as helpful resources for common NICU issues.
You'll find helpful videos in the Procedure Videos resource, including: neonatal PICC placement, umbilical vascular catheterization. Don't forget to keep your Procedure Log updated as you progress through this rotation!
