Adolescent Medicine
Welcome to your Adolescent Medicine rotation! Here are your Goals and Objectives.
You will receive an email from Dr. Sydney Hartman-Munick detailing your schedule as your block begins.
On lighter days, we ask that you complete the following online learning to supplement your clinical experiences:
- On the Johns Hopkins curriculum, the following modules:
- Approach to the Adolescent Patient
- Contraception and the Adolescent
- Eating Disorders in Adolescents
- Sexually Transmitted Infections in Adolescents
- Normal and Abnormal Adolescent Growth and Development
- Vaginal Bleeding and Pregnancy
If you find yourself with further time available, do check in with the chiefs. There are unpredictably lighter blocks in the setting of faculty vacations/holidays/etc. Further online resources to consider include:
- The Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Fenway Health have partnered to create a repository of training courses about LGBTQ health for healthcare providers. A full list of the course content can be found here. The materials cover topics ranging from Effective and Affirming Communication to Affirming Care for Transgender and Gender Diverse Children and Adolescents. The content is in the form of webinars, e-modules, and publication references.
- The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine has created a curriculum designed to supplement a 4 week rotation or longitudinally. Access the modules here.
- CHOP OPEN offers modules on a number of adolescent topics including eating disorders, scoliosis, STIs, gender diverse youth, motivational interviewing, common health issues for young men... and more! We highly recommend taking a look.
- Great web resources for adolescent sexuality, contraception info, as well as general info:
- US Medical Eligibility Criteria (US MEC) for Contraceptive Use, 2016 | CDC
- Guttmacher Institute | Good reproductive health policy starts with credible research
- Standards of Care for the Health of Transgender and Gender Diverse People, Version 8 (tandfonline.com)
- From Boston Children’s Hospital—Tons of patient friendly handouts on just about every adolescent topic you can think of, great contraception info. Much of the material is available in Spanish and Portuguese
- Bedsider.org: Excellent birth control info—no question they can’t answer, probably best for older teens/young adults
