Introduction to Codes, Part 2: Code Leadership and Pulseless Electrical Activity Tutorial

PEA Lecture

Modeled PEA Code

What is is: The above 2 links are from a simulation research study completed in 2020. The first is a narrated lecture about Pulseless Electrical Activity and code leadership. The second demonstrates a resident leading a team through a simulated Pulseless Electrical Activity arrest.

Ideal Audience: All residents – in particular interns and 2nd year residents preparing for the PICU

Why it is great: Learn similar code/PEA curriculum via 2 different learning styles to prepare yourself for the simulation curriculum as well as real life patient events. Actually see and hear what is sounds and looks like to assign team member roles, perform cycles of CPR, use closed-loop communication and hear a resident "think out loud" for the team.

How to access it: Click above Vimeo links.

How much time to budget for this: The videos are about 15 min and 8 minutes in length. Budget about 30-40 min to watch, pause, re-watch, take notes, etc.

Other thoughts/comments/advice: Have your code cards out while you watch these videos. You will be able to utilize your cards in real life best if you have looked at them a few times in advance. Re-watch these as needed before specific rotations! Also, as stated in the disclaimer, we ask that these videos "shall not be distributed, reproduced, modified, adapted or otherwise used beyond the specific purpose for which it is provided without the written consent of the Pediatrics Department of UMass Memorial Medical Center."

*All residents should have this emergency card to keep with your badge! Talk to Monick or Kate if yours is missing
