This special edition of @umasschan magazine celebrates Victor Ambros, PhD, the newest Nobel laureate at UMass Chan Medical School. Given the budget constraints created by the sudden shortfall in National Institutes of Health funding at UMass Chan, we found it fiscally prudent to deliver this edition electronically rather than to print and mail the magazine as we normally would.
Dr. Ambros’ seminal co-discovery of microRNA fundamentally changed basic science research, demonstrating the immense power and impact of federal investment in science. The cover story of this edition of @umasschan details the incredible work that led to that unexpected breakthrough and tells the story of the scientists—Ambros and Rosalind (Candy) Lee—who made it happen.
The magazine, produced by the Office of Communications, also includes a feature about the origins of the RNA Therapeutics Institute, which Ambros co-directed, and its ability to attract and retain some of the best RNA scientists in the world; and a story comprising first-person reflections from five students who were mentored as they pursued their PhDs in the labs run by Ambros and Lee.
