UMass Medical School’s Department of Psychiatry will host the 11th Annual Central Massachusetts Regional Brain Bee on Saturday, Feb. 11, on the university campus in Worcester.
A nationwide program created by the Society for Neuroscience, the competition is meant to bolster high school student interest in medical and laboratory neuroscience careers.
This competition tests teenagers’ knowledge of neuroscience with a 25-question, multiple choice exam; ability to label parts of the brain (neuro-anatomy); and skill in diagnosing neuropsychiatric conditions. The 10 highest scorers then compete in a round-robin oral questioning period until a winner is determined. In 2016, more than 60 students from area schools competed in the event.
Each year the department recognizes the winner with the Andrew M. Sheridan Young Neuroscientist Award and then sponsors his or her trip to the National Brain Bee competition at the society’s Baltimore headquarters in March.
This year, in addition to the competition, addiction psychiatrist Caridad Ponce Martinez, MD, will give a brief presentation to the students called “How Opioids Affect Your Brain.”
