Graduate programs at UMass Chan Medical School are among the best in the nation according to the U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools 2026.
Primary care education at UMass Chan is ranked first in Massachusetts and among the best nationwide, ranking in the top half of medical schools, while the Doctor of Nursing Practice program ranked 29th among 154 programs. The PhD program at UMass Chan ranked 55th among 159 doctoral programs in the biological sciences.
Research at UMass Chan ranked in the top half of medical schools in the country for research activity and funding.
“Our collaborative ethos, innovative research environment and relentless focus on educating the next generation of physicians, advanced practice nurses and scientists motivate us to continue to strive to reach new heights of excellence and impact in furtherance of our mission in Massachusetts and, indeed, throughout the world,” said Chancellor Michael F. Collins. “This recognition is a testament to the collective commitment and inspiring contributions of our vibrant community of faculty, staff and learners.”
UMass Chan has consistently been rated among the top medical schools for primary care education since U.S. News first published its rankings more than 30 years ago, reflecting the Medical School’s founding mission of preparing primary care physicians to serve the people of the commonwealth. This year, 61 students, or 35 percent of the T.H. Chan School of Medicine’s graduating class, matched into residencies in primary care and related specialties, including internal medicine, family medicine and pediatrics.
In its continuing mission of educational excellence, the T.H. Chan School of Medicine introduced its Vista curriculum in 2022. The 2026 graduates are the first class to complete all four years of the new curriculum, which incorporates a health system science pillar, in addition to the biomedical and clinical science pillars, and incorporates health equity, diversity and inclusion, population and community health, and patient and provider wellness into students’ studies.
In addition to its educational mission, UMass Chan is a world-class research institution that attracted nearly $200 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health in fiscal year 2025, according to the Blue Ridge Institute for Biomedical Research.
