Thomas Smith MD
Thomas W. Smith is a Professor of Pathology, Neurology and Neurosurgery and Director of Autopsy, Neuropathology and Diagnostic Electron Microscopy Services, Department of Pathology, UMASS Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Smith graduated from Ohio State University, obtained his MD from Weil Cornell Medical College, then did Anatomic Pathology Residency at New York Presbyterian- Cornell University Medical Center before completing his Neuropathology Residency and Anatomic Neuropathology Fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital- Harvard Medical School. An eminent neuropathologist, he has been on staff at UMASS for over 40 years, with over 160 peer-reviewed publications on many neurological and pathological topics of interest, 13 book chapters and countless abstracts. A dedicated educator, he is the chair of the Foundations of Medicine Second Year Curriculum Committee, Co-Director of the Brain Nervous System and Behavior and Organ System Diseases courses for Medical Students. He is also a much beloved teacher having won the Teacher of The Year Award from the Neurology Residency Program 4 times, The Educational Achievement Award 3 times, and the Outstanding Educator Award 5 times, as well as the Lamar Soutter Award and AOA induction as Faculty from the Medical School. Dr. Smith’s research includes a wide variety of topics encompassing all of clinical neurology but some highlights include his work on Microvascular changes in Down’s Syndrome and Alzheimer’s with David Drachman, CAG repeat expansions in Huntington’s Disease with Neil Aronin, The Clinical Neuropathology of Lewy Body Dementia and Alzheimer’s with Carol Lippa, David Drachman and Joan Swearer, TDP-43 Function in ALS with Robert Brown, Fatty Acid Binding Protein 4 in Anaplastic Meningiomas with Oguz Cataltepe and various other topics in CNS neoplasia, forensic pathology and many very interesting case reports and case series.
