About the Vascular Neurology Fellowship

UMass Chan Medical School partners with UMass Memorial Health to provide a comprehensive education and training program in our Stroke Center and Vascular Neurology department.

UMass Memorial Medical Center is a cornerstone for medical care throughout central and western New England, a Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, a Level I trauma center with more than 140,000 annual ED visits, the home of the LifeFlight emergency helicopter service, and the hub for an established telestroke program that brings neurovascular expertise into community hospitals. There are more than 800 patients admitted to the UMass Stroke Service annually. Our comprehensive stroke center provides access to the state-of-the-art neurocritical care unit as well as Neurointerventional radiology, and neurosurgery.

Muhammad Khurram Afzal, MD, vascular neurology fellow, received neurology residency training at St. Louis University, School of medicine- Neurovascular Fellowship at UMass Chan Medical School

Annie Ferris, MD, received neurology residency training at UMass Chan Medical School and joined the faculty team upon graduation.

Ray Catton, MD, received neurology residency training at UMass Chan Medical School. Catton, MD, began a Neuro Interventional Radiology fellowship program after leaving UMass Chan.

July 2021 - June 2022
Shakaib Qureshi, MD, MBBS vascular neurology fellow received training from the Gulf Medical; University in the United Arab Emirates. Qureshi, MD, MBBS, went on to work at Mercy Health in Michigan.

Simona Nedelcu, MD, PhD, vascular neurology fellow, received neurology residency training at UMass Chan Medical School. Nedelcu, MD, PhD, transitioned to the Neuro Interventional Radiology fellowship for additional specialty training.

Marwa Elnazeir, MD, was our graduating fellow. Marwa Elnazeir, MD received training from St. Matthew’s University in Grand Cayman.

Raphaella Weiser, MD, was our graduating fellow. Raphaella Weiser, MD, received training from the Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel.

July 2019 - June 2020
Zimbul Albo, MD,PhD, was our graduating fellow. Zimbul Albo, MD, PhD, received training from the Central University of Venezuela, and went on to work at Tufts Medical Center

Muhammad Azeem, MBBS- Came from the Shifa College of Medicine in Pakistan.

Sandhya Mehla, MBBS, was our graduating fellow. Sandhya Mehla, MBBS received training from the M P Shah Government Medical College in India, and went on to work at the Hartford Healthcare Headache Center in CT.
