IMSD Admissions

The UMass Chan Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) was awarded in 2015 under the leadership of Drs. Brian Lewis and Kate Lapane. The goal of the IMSD is to increase diversity in the biomedical, behavioral and clinical research fields. IMSD-supported trainees are provided an additional year of salary support from the GSBS as well as funds to support the attendance at national or international research and career development conferences. Salary support from the IMSD grant is typically provided during year 1, 2 or year 3 of graduate study.


  • UMass Chan students entering years 1-3 engaged in full-time study towards the PhD; and
  • Are from groups considered to be underrepresented in the biomedical sciences (Section III.3).
  • Eligibility for salary support is limited to students entering years 1-3 of graduate study at UMass Chan.
  • Students enrolled in combined degree programs (MD/PhD, DVM/PhD) are not eligible for support.

Amount of support

Salary support equivalent to the GSBS student stipend will be provided. The costs of student health insurance, dental insurance and all GSBS fees are also covered.

In exchange for salary support from the IMSD grant, students are expected to fully engage in IMSD-supported activities.

Duration of support

Support is provided for a maximum of 12 months. Support begins on September 1.
