Dermatologic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology
The Department of Dermatology section of Dermatologic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology offers comprehensive care for cutaneous malignancies including basal and squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, adnexal neoplasms, and other rare tumors. We perform the full array of surgical procedures including excision of benign and malignant tumors, Mohs micrographic surgery, scar revision, and dermabrasion. Dermatology residents each have a weekly procedure clinic staffed by an attending physician or surgical fellow in which they learn basic to advanced surgical techniques in a progressive manner, as well as nonsurgical management of cutaneous malignancies. In addition, third year residents rotate through the Mohs clinic. The clinic is staffed by our four surgical attendings, a Mohs surgery fellow and our nurse practitioner.

Mary E. Maloney, M.D. - Director of Dermatologic Surgery
Mary E. Maloney, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Director of Dermatologic Surgery, received her B.A. degree from Connecticut College. Dr. Maloney pursued her medical degree at the University of Vermont, graduating in 1977. She trained in Internal Medicine at Hartford Hospital through 1979, and then completed her dermatology residency in 1982 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic. This was followed by a research fellowship at the University of California at San Francisco in 1982 and a fellowship in dermatologic surgery in 1983. Dr. Maloney was on the medical faculty at Dartmouth, and then at the University of Vermont before moving to the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in 1988 where she was promoted to Professor of Medicine and Director of Dermatological Surgery. She moved to UMass Memorial Health Care in 1999 where she is the Chair of the Department of Dermatology.
Dr. Maloney is a past president of the Association of Academic Dermatologic Surgery and past secretary of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. In 1999, she chaired both the Council on Education and the Scientific Assembly Council for the American Academy of Dermatology, with responsibility for the education and management of the largest dermatological scientific session in the world. She has served on the board of directors of the American Academy or Dermatology and was Assistant Secretary Treasurer from 2004-2007 and Secretary Treasurer from 2007-2010. She is the author of 'The Dermatologic Surgical Suite', and has edited two textbooks, 'Cutaneous Oncology' and 'Surgical Dermatopathology', and has been very active in leadership activities in dermatology.
As Director of Dermatologic Surgery, Dr. Maloney provides Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancers and other surgical services to dermatological patients.
Dori Goldberg, M.D. - Director of Procedural Dermatology Fellowship
Dr. Dori Goldberg received her Bachelor's of Science degreee in Neuroscience from Brandeis University in 1998, graduating magna cum laude. She attended UMass Chan Medical School where she graduated in 2003. Dr. Goldberg stayed on to complete an internship in Internal Medicine and her dermatology residency in 2007.
She then completed a fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery and cutaneous oncology with Dr. Mary Maloney in June 2008. Dr. Goldberg has stayed on to become an Assistant Professor of Medicine here at UMass Chan Medical School where she practices both surgical dermatology including Mohs surgery and general medical dermatology. She became the program director for the fellowship in 2018. She is currently developing a cosmetic dermatology program within the division.
Mark J. Scharf, M.D. – Director of Laser Surgery
Dr. Mark Scharf received his Bachelor of Arts degree in biological sciences from the University of Chicago in 1978. He attended the Emory University School of Medicine and went on to complete internship in Internal Medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He trained in dermatology at Massachusetts General Hospital, completing residency in 1986.
Dr. Scharf then joined the Department of Dermatology at the University of Massachusetts where he is a Clinical Professor of Medicine. He also serves as the director of the phototherapy unit, director of the Dermatology Laser Center and serves as a member of the Laser Safety Subcommittee. Dr. Scharf spent 2 years precepting with Dr. Mary Maloney in Mohs surgery at UMass Memorial from July 2005 – June 2007. He was granted clinical priveledges in Mohs surgery in July 2007.
Amanda Auerbach, M.D. – Mohs Surgeon
Dr. Amanda Auerbach received her Bachelor of Arts in Art and Biology from Colby College in 2004. She attended University at Buffalo State University of New York School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences where she graduated in 2009 and went on to complete internship in Internal Medicine at Caritas Carney Hospital, Affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine. In 2010 she completed a fellowship in clinical research in dermatology at Massachusetts General Hospital. She trained in dermatology at UMass Chan Medical School, completing residency in 2014.
She then completed a fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery and cutaneous oncology in 2015. Dr. Auerbach has stayed on part time to become an Assistant Professor of Medicine here at UMass Chan Medical School where she practices surgical dermatology.
Bassel Mahmoud Abdallah, M.D. P.h.D, FAAD – Mohs Surgeon
Dr. Bassel Mahmoud Abdallah, received his medical degreee from Ain Shams University-Faculty of Medicine in Egypt. He completed a Dermatology residency program at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan in 2013. He received an Outstanding Resident Award for dedication, and exceptional achievements as a physician, researcher and teacher. Furthermore; Dr. Mahmoud completed a Procedural Dermatology fellowship program in 2014, affiliated with Harvard Medical School, Lahey Clinic, for additional training in the management of skin cancers. Dr. Mahmoud's clinical interest in dermatologic surgery including Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancers, nail surgery, scar revision, lasers, cosmetic surgery and pigmentary disorders. Dr. Mahmoud is board certified in dermatology. He also speak Arabic and French fluently. He has edited a textbook on the management of vitiligo; he has written 8 book chapters and has more 20 peer-reviewed publications in the field of photodermatology, lasers and dermatologic surgery.
