Undergraduate medical education

The Department of Dermatology and its faculty are deeply involved in undergraduate medical education through leadership roles as course directors, teachers, collaborators with faculty in other departments, committee members, program developers and student mentors/advisors.

Under the direction of Patrick Mulvaney, MD, the department manages the pathophysiology component of Organ System Diseases (OSD), a significant course in the second year, which includes a two-week dermatology block. We host third-year medical students in one-week Flexible Clinical Experiences (FCE) rotations. Faculty members and senior residents lead multiple conferences throughout the year for internal medicine, pediatric, family medicine and emergency medicine residents at UMass Chan Medical School.

The dermatology rotation typically welcomes fourth-year UMass Chan students, visiting medical students interested in dermatology, and UMass Chan residents from other specialties. During this rotation, visitors are able to attend a variety of general and subspecialty clinics at the UMass Memorial Medical Center Hahnemann Campus and Ambulatory Care Clinic sites, including adult medical dermatology, pediatric dermatology, surgical/Mohs, laser, vitiligo, transplant, genodermatoses, cosmetic and epidermolysis bullosa clinics. There is also a pediatric dermatology rotation available on a case-by-case basis.
