Subspecialties in Dermatology
The Department of Dermatology offers a wide variety of subspecialty clinics and services through its clinical partner, UMass Memorial Medical Center:
Connective Tissue Disease
The CTD clinic provides care for patients with a wide range of autoimmune and autoinflammatory conditions which affect that skin including cutaneous lupus, morphea, and dermatomyositis.
Contact Dermatitis
The contact dermatitis clinic is integrated into the medical and pediatric dermatology clinic. We use a 90-allergen patch test panel consisting of the most commonly implicated allergens as reported by the American Contact Dermatitis Society.
Cosmetic Dermatology
Procedures offered include botulinum toxin injections, superficial chemical peels, dermabrasion, and soft tissue filler injections.
Cutaneous Lymphoma
The Cutaneous Lymphoma Clinic is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of a diverse group of patients affected by the full spectrum of primary cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders, including both T- and B-cell processes. This clinic utilizes a patient-centered approach to offer access to a broad array of cutting-edge skin-directed and systemic treatments. Collaboration with other specialties is frequently employed in order to provide unrivaled multidisciplinary cancer care.
Dermatopathology
Our dermatopathology service is housed in a state-of-the-art facility and processes approximately 20,000 skin specimens from dermatology clinics at UMass Memorial Medical Center as well as from other dermatology practices in Central Massachusetts.
Epidermolysis Bullosa Clinic
This evolving multidisciplinary clinic manages approximately 50 patients with epidermolysis bullosa. The group is involved in the multi center EBCRC (Epidermolysis Bullosa Clinical Research Consortium).
Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Our center provides weekly access to comprehensive medical and surgical care to patients with this chronic inflammatory condition. The work to treat and understand this disease is augmented by dedicated basic science investigation within our department.
Laser Dermatology
The laser program specializes in the treatment of vascular malformations/conditions, tattoos, scars/resurfacing, warts, and hair removal using the following devices:
- Carbon dioxide laser
- Pulsed dye laser (V Beam)
- Q switched Ruby laser
- Q switched Nd:Yag laser
- Long pulsed Nd:Yag laser
- Long pulsed Alexandrite
- Sciton Halo
Mohs Micrographic Surgery
Providing the gold standard in treatment of cutaneous malignancies, we treat over 2,500 tumors per year using Mohs micrographic surgery. Our surgeons and trainees perform nearly all reconstructions of these cases, including those which require general anesthesia, and are fortunate to have outstanding colleagues in surgical oncology, medical oncology, oculoplastic/plastic surgery and otolaryngology for more advanced cases that require multidisciplinary involvement. UMass is a high-volume transplant center and several of our surgeons have clinical expertise in the care of solid organ transplant recipients who are at increased risk for multiple and aggressive skin cancers.
Pediatric Dermatology
Provides general outpatient pediatric dermatology clinics, laser and surgical clinics, inpatient consults, a multidisciplinary clinic with genetics, and a regional epidermolysis bullosa clinic.
Vitiligo/Alopecia Areata
In order to complement basic, translational and clinical research on vitiligo and other autoimmune diseases in our division, this clinic focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with vitiligo, alopecia areata, and those with multiple autoimmune diseases. In addition to clinical care, this clinic provides specimens for translational research studies. We are also a leader in the field of Melanocyte-Keratinocyte Transplant Procedure (MKTP) and one of the few centers to offer this in the world. Read more about vitiligo research.
