Download printable version of the webpage

Background: Any UMass Chan faculty member can act as a UMass Chan Elective Advisor, and can use this 1-page checklist to keep track of the responsibilities for serving in the capacity of a UMass Chan Elective Advisor.

Questions can be sent to the UMass Chan International Medical Education Program (IMEP) via email at:  IMEP-GHP@umassmed.edu.

  1. Before the global health experience:  Meet with the student to review the Global Health Experience Request (GHER) Worksheet

The GHER Worksheet should be completed by the student, and then provided to the UMass Chan Elective Advisor.

The UMass Chan Elective Advisor should do the following during the review of the GHER Worksheet:

        • Review and approve the learning objectives of the proposed global health experience
        • Confirm that the description and learning objections are appropriate for the student's level of training
        • Review and discuss preparation and safety information with the student

After the review of the GHER Worksheet is completed successfully, the UMass Chan Elective Advisor can do the following steps:

        • The UMass Chan Elective Advisor gives approval of the GHER Worksheet to the student (either verbally or via email)
        • The UMass Chan Elective Advisor agrees to be the student's UMass Chan Elective Advisor for this student's proposed global health experience, which entails the responsibilities described on this 1-page checklist

2. During the global health experience:   Act as the a contact person at UMass Chan for questions or concerns that cannot be addressed by the Supervisor at the Host Institution while participating in the global health experience

3. At the conclusion of the global health experience:   Review the student's Global Health Trip Report Worksheet and provide feedback to the student

The Global Health Trip Report Worksheet is written by the student toward the end of the global health elective or experience, and has two main functions:

        • Provide basic information about the global health experience which can help UMass Chan and future students
        • Provide the student with an opportunity to reflect on what they have learned from the experience

After the UMass Chan Elective Advisor provides the student with feedback, the student will then submit the final online Global Health Trip Report, so that it may be posted on UMass Chan Lamar Soutter eScholarship@UMass Chan website.
