What is SEED?
A medical student group aimed at increasing the number of under-represented and disadvantaged students entering into the biomedical and healthcare fields.
We work with a group of ~50 juniors from North High School (NHS) in Worcester to:
1. Promote awareness of the healthcare and biomedical fields
2. Increase exposure to healthcare and biomedical professions
3. Encourage academic excellence
Why is SEED needed?
- 82% of NHS students are from low-income families
- The mean SAT scores for Critical Reading, Math, and Writing are all below the 50th percentile
- NHS’s overall performance relative to other 4 year high schools is in the 8th percentile
- The annual dropout rate is double the state average
- 34% of students scored proficient or higher on MCAS science in 2013 and 48% in math

How can I get involved?
How can I get involved?
- Speak at one of four hour long Q&A sessions this fall about your experiences from high school to professional school and beyond, what obstacles you overcame, and how to be successful academically and professionally
- Volunteer to teach medical skills at the Simulation Center event
- Enhance students’ writing ability as they prepare to apply to college
- Mentor students as they decide upon what career path to take
- Expand the group to do even more amazing things!
- Time commitment can range from as little as a 1 hour Q&A session to planning out entire events, whatever you want to put into it
