Information about SEED

What is SEED?

A medical student group aimed at increasing the number of under-represented and disadvantaged students entering into the biomedical and healthcare fields.

We work with a group of ~50 juniors from North High School (NHS) in Worcester to:

1. Promote awareness of the healthcare and biomedical fields

2. Increase exposure to healthcare and biomedical professions

3. Encourage academic excellence

Why is SEED needed?

  • 82% of NHS students are from low-income families
  • The mean SAT scores for Critical Reading, Math, and Writing are all below the 50th percentile
  • NHS’s overall performance relative to other 4 year high schools is in the 8th percentile
  • The annual dropout rate is double the state average
  • 34% of students scored proficient or higher on MCAS science in 2013 and 48% in math
