William White, MD - Laurel House Mentor

Bill grew up in Kaneohe, Hawai’i on the island of Oahu. He received his bachelor's degree summa cum laude from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. After graduation he spent four years in evolution/ecology research involving guppies in Trinidadian rainforests and butterflies on the prairies of Minnesota. Formative experiences in this time convinced him to change paths and pursue medicine. Bill received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus in 2018 and completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Maine Medical Center in 2022. He has been in practice at UMass since then.

Bill is a career dual adult/pediatric hospitalist and clinician educator and attends on both services regularly at the medical center. His interests in medicine include:

  • Teaching and coaching diagnostic and clinical reasoning
  • Interdisciplinary simulation and mock code
  • Difficult conversations and complex communication in medicine
  • The intersection of philosophy and medicine

Bill is the physician lead for the adult inpatient disordered eating protocol at UMMMC, and together with friends and colleagues has helped create a novel billing support team for hospital medicine, the North pavilion interdisciplinary mock code project, and an upcoming fourth year elective on philosophy and medicine. In 2026 he was honored with induction into the faculty gold humanism Honor Society and received the UMass Chan internal medicine residency’s teacher of the year award. He generally relishes wearing too many hats at work.

When he isn't at work or fixing things around the house, you can often find Bill on a gravel bike, making the most of the Maine coastline, or hiking or skiing in the White Mountains. He is a passionate home cook and a lover of languages, theater, and dance. Bill lives in a wooded enclave in the town of Boylston, Massachusetts with his partner and two strange and poorly behaved cats.
